Nick Plato was born in Shawnee Mission, Kansas and grew up in Edwardsville, Illinois. He graduated from Edwardsville High School in 2008.

As a high school athlete, Nick Plato closed out his senior season offensively with 10 catches for 221 yards and defensively with 93 tackles and 7 sacks. He earned many awards including the All-Area Team, All-Conference First-Team, and he was a St. Louis Super 30 selection.

All of these awards came after Nick Plato had to sit out his junior season due to injury from a car accident. He made the most of his senior year, though, and earned the attention of the Kansas Jayhawks.

In 2008, Nick Plato redshirted with the Kansas Jayhawks football team.
