Kevin Young was born in Olathe, Kansas.

Kevin Young attended Olathe North High School. He was a three-year letter winner and played tight end and defensive end. As a senior Kevin Young was an all-state, all-league and all-city selection. Team was 8-3 on the season and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. His junior season he recorded 80 tackles and 12 sacks while earning all-league second team honors. Was all-city and all-league in basketball.

In 2009, he redshirted and did not see any action. Kevin Young was named the George Mrkonic Defensive Scout Player of the Year for the Jayhawks.
